Common questions for Indiana CHAMP Resource Hub users.
What is a CHAMP consultation?
Indiana CHAMP is a free consultation service for Indiana healthcare providers. Our call line functions as a "curbside consultation" resource for all providers in the state of Indiana. Our psychiatrists odder provider-to-provider guidance to support the management of adult and perinatal mental health and substance use concerns in the primary care setting.
Who can use CHAMP?
CHAMP is available to Indiana healthcare providers who prescribe or manage care for adult and perinatal patients, including:
- Physicians (MD/DO)
- Nurse Practitioners (NP)
- Physician Assistants (PA)
- Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM)
Is there a cost to use CHAMP?
No. CHAMP services are provided at no cost to eligible healthcare providers through funding from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA)

What type of questions can I call about?
Providers commonly contact for guidance on:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- ADHD
- Bipolar disorder
- Psychosis
- PTSD and trauma-related disorders

- Perinatal mental health
- Diagnostic clarification
- Treatment planning

How Quickly will I receive a callback?
Our goal is to connect providers with a CHAMP psychiatrist within approximately 60 minutes during normal business hours. You can also, request a call back at a specified time during CHAMP operational hours.
How long does a consult ususally take?
Most consultations last between 5-15 Minutes, depending on the complexity of the case. Our Psychiatrists are happy to take as long as needed!
Can I discuss more than one patient during a call
Yes, Please inform our Navigator if this is the case.
Do I need to register before using CHAMP
No, we can register you via phone if it is your first time calling in. once registered you will not need to complete this step again. Register for CHAMP here
Scope of Services
Does CHAMP provide direct patient care?
No. CHAMP is a provider-to-provider consultation service. We do not evaluate or treat patients directly.
Can CHAMP prescribe medications?
No. CHAMP Psychiatrists do not prescribe medications. Treatment decisions and prescribing remain the responsibility of the treating providers.
Does CHAMP provide expedited psychiatry referrals?
No. While we may recommend appropriate resources., CHAMP does not schedule psychiatric appointments or provide expedited referrals.
Who is responsible for patient care after the consultation?
The treating healthcare provider remains responsible for all clinical decisions and ongoing patient care. CHAMP consultations are intended to provide expert guidance to support clinical decision-making.
Can CHAMP Help during a behavioral health emergency?
CHAMP is not an emergency service.
If a patient is experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, call 911 or direct the patient to the nearest emergency department. Individuals experiencing mental health crisi may also contact or text 988 for immediate support.
Education
What is Project ECHO
Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a collaborative training model that connects local professionals with subject-matter experts using video conferencing. Project ECHO's main goal is to share knowledge globally so people in rural and underserved areas get better care without having to travel long distances.
Do you have to present a case to attend Project ECHO
No. Providers are welcome to attend and learn even if they do not present a case.
Are continuing education credits available?
Many CHAMP educational programs, including project ECHO, offer continuing education credits. Individual event pages will indicate whether credit is available.
